We are passionate about Newhaven’s History

Newhaven Historical Society is an entirely volunteer run Charitable Incorporated Organisation. As well as being custodians of Newhaven’s heritage, we run Newhaven Museum a treasure trove of objects, images and stories relating to Newhaven’s fascinating past. The museum is open four days a week between April and October. Research and group visits can be arranged outside the usual opening times by appointment.

Throughout the year we curate a series of 5 interesting heritage talks held at the Hillcrest Centre open to both members and visitors. We also take part in local festivals, such as the Fish Festival, Denton Challenge and Lifeboat Fete to which we take a selection of enlarged photographs for people to browse through.

Our collection includes artefacts, documents and artworks relating to the town’s social, industrial, creative, military and maritime heritage. We have a growing collection of over digitised 20,000 photographs, some dating back as far as 1860, which can be viewed from a touch screen in the museum.

Why not come and visit us at the museum or join us at the Hillcrest Centre for one of our talks.
